The Milkhouse Creamery was a wonderful Second Breakfast! The small shop is adorable! The atmosphere is cozy and the employees are hospitable.
Along with a glass bottle of their delicious chocolate milk, Gregg had a scoop of Fluffernutter Banana and I had a scoop of teaberry. Both flavors are regional.
The helpful ice cream barista behind the counter was surprised that I didn’t grow up eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Gregg did. It was a treat when his mom added marshmallow fluff, making it Fluffernutter Banana.
Pennsylvanians are also familiar with teaberry which is not actually tea or a berry. It was especially popular in gum. The flavor is unique, a blend of faint mint flavor and birch beer. This creamery also adds small pieces of maraschino cherries. I found it to be delicious and refreshing.
Since we were the only customers, the barista shared interesting information. The years before COVID-19, when the PA Ice Cream Trail was official, the creameries would make the occasion more festive with special cups and spoons that change colors when cold. They buy these items from California which aren’t available now. I wish I had asked if production is shut down or they aren’t exporting them out of California/into PA.
She shared that they make ice cream on the weekends. They mix it on Fridays and churn on Saturdays and Sundays. They use a large Emmerson ice cream freezer. Their small facility bottles milk the rest of the week.
We didn’t notice any cows, they may have been in for milking. She indicated that the cows were close by.
PRO TIP: When transporting ice cream, do NOT try to keep it cold using cold packs! The cold packs are actually warmer than the ice cream, so they cause it to melt. She suggested putting the ice cream in a cooler or freezer storage bag and fill the empty space with a blanket or towel.
