My ears popped as we enjoyed beautiful rolling mountain views heading towards Elizabethtown, PA. I think we are in the Appalachian Mountains (no, we’re not stopping to walk the trail). We began this adventure in the Allegheny Mountains in Western PA, crossed the Appalachian, and went through Pocono Mountains in Eastern PA. Now we are headed back. A lovely drive. I didn’t realize that Pennsylvania is mostly mountains!
To be honest, we had low expectations from an ice cream store that seemed to be inside a candy store. We were pleasantly surprised! This ice cream rose to our top 5 creameries so far! Just wow!
I had teaberry. I wanted to taste it without maraschino cherries. It was fruity-minty and very refreshing.
Gregg had chocolate banana. The flavors blended perfectly, neither flavor stole the show.
The texture was creamy yet it had small ice crystals, allowing it to hold the cold in your mouth. A spoonful sitting on my tongue stayed there for an appropriate amount of time, making my tongue cold. Some airy ice creams seem to evaporate quickly in my mouth.
We had a delightful conversation with the proprietors. This is their third summer in business and they already have a second location!
They buy their base-mix from a local dairy and add in the flavorings as they make it. They are intention about using quality ingredients and creating their own flavors. She said she made dill pickle ice cream last year. She didn’t care for it but some customers loved it.
For future reference, they raved about their Emory Thompson batch freezer, water cooled (which keeps the kitchen cooler than air-cooled machines.)
Sweet Treats & More is definitely worth the drive!
